Renault Group Leading Innovation in Virtual Reality Testing and Simulation
In an innovative leap forward, the Renault Group has co-developed a cutting-edge driving simulator named ROADS, in collaboration with AV Simulation. This joint venture, comprising Sogeclair, Renault Group, Dassault Systemes, and UTAC, also includes key partners such as Oktal, IXBLUE, and Hexagon, who contribute to the development of driving simulators and the SCANeR© driving simulation software.
The Immersive Simulation Centre, where ROADS is housed, spans nearly 1,400 m2 and stands a towering 12 m high. Installed within this dedicated hall, ROADS offers a 360° phygital immersion experience, capable of housing an entire vehicle.
The simulator's versatility knows no bounds. It can simulate a real road, create imaginary roads, or combine both, ensuring that every aspect of a vehicle's behaviour, performance, safety, and driving aids can be assessed at any stage in the vehicle's development.
The digital twin, a precise replica of the vehicle under development, is created within the Immersive Simulation Centre. This digital twin encompasses the characteristics of the vehicle, the modelling of its road behaviour, and that of its driving assistance systems and on-board software. ROADS reproduces the dynamic behaviour of any vehicle in any conditions, including road types, traffic density, interactions with other vehicles, altitude, weather, and luminosity.
To thoroughly test the digital twin, "massive" simulations are carried out in the Cloud. These simulations subject the digital twin to millions of road situations, ensuring it performs optimally in all possible conditions. Real drivers can also test the behaviour of the vehicle under development on the ROADS immersive simulator, ensuring it meets the expectations of future customers.
The Immersive Simulation Centre employs over 70 engineers, some of whom are dedicated to the Scenario Factory, responsible for designing and creating these realistic driving scenarios. With ROADS, the Renault Group is setting a new standard in vehicle development and testing, paving the way for safer and more efficient vehicles of the future.
