Freiburg, a city in Germany, is taking a significant step towards becoming a digital pioneer by launching a new data platform called Daten:Raum:Freiburg (D:R:F). The platform is a collaborative effort between the city and the Federal Ministry of Housing, Urban Development, and Building, in partnership with the KfW Bank, with a total funding of 8.3 million euros over five years. Freiburg is contributing 4.5 million euros to the project.

Mayor Martin Horn describes D:R:F as representing modern, data-driven urban development that is understandable, transparent, and community-oriented. The platform is designed to facilitate applications such as digital twins, traffic simulations, climate simulations, and barrier-free information search in urban development.

D:R:F is open to contributions from universities, companies, clinics, and citizens. The platform aims to connect and make publicly accessible data from various fields, including air quality, traffic conditions, neighborhood age structures, population, housing, and social indicators. One such application is the new city district atlas, which is part of the D:R:F platform.

The long-term goal of D:R:F is to support data-driven urban development. It is progressing towards the realization of smart city applications and moving towards the development of applications for smart cities. D:R:F prioritizes data protection and security, with no personal data being processed and data sovereignty lying with the city.

D:R:F may be used for creating digital twins of the city, traffic simulations, climate simulations, and barrier-free information search. These applications are expected to enhance the city's infrastructure and services, making them more efficient and accessible.

Freiburg's efforts to launch D:R:F are part of its ambition to join the ranks of digital pioneers in Germany. The platform is expected to contribute significantly to smart cities and data-driven urban development, making Freiburg a leader in digital innovation.
