The Huawei Pura 80 Ultra has entered the smartphone market with a bang, boasting a groundbreaking dual-lens Periscope camera that is set to redefine mobile photography. This innovative camera system offers a host of impressive features that stand out among its competitors.

At the heart of the Huawei Pura 80 Ultra's camera is a 1-inch, 50 MP RYYB sensor - the largest in the industry for a smartphone camera. This sensor, combined with a dual-lens telephoto module, offers an unprecedented optical zoom range. The first lens provides a 3.7x optical zoom (83mm equivalent, f/2.4), while the second achieves a 9.4x optical zoom (212mm equivalent, f/3.6).

Unlike traditional setups, Huawei uses a unique internal mechanism involving moving prisms and mirrors to physically switch between the two telephoto lenses. This mechanism, tested over 180,000 times for reliability, saves space within the phone and offers a long true optical zoom range, rivalling competitors like the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra.

The camera system also includes a 40 MP ultra-wide camera with autofocus and a dedicated spectral sensor for accurate colour reproduction. These features contribute to versatile and high-fidelity photography, making the Huawei Pura 80 Ultra one of the top two smartphone cameras in the industry, alongside the Vivo X200 Ultra.

The Huawei Pura 80 Ultra's 10X zoom shot produces sharper details and exhibits true background compression, as demonstrated in a test where two shots of a friend were taken at 3.7X and 10X zoom, with the framing remaining relatively the same. The 10X shot showed stronger background compression, highlighting the camera's ability to capture stunning images.

Powered by a solid chip self-developed by Huawei, the Huawei Pura 80 Ultra is currently on sale in China and will soon be available in Southeast Asia and Europe. While more testing is needed to determine its exact ranking in terms of smartphone camera performance, the Huawei Pura 80 Ultra's dual-lens Periscope camera is a potential trend that other Chinese brands may follow in the coming years.
