Robotaxis Developed by Rimac Commence Test Runs in Zagreb
Revised Article:
April 1st, 2025 - The streets of Zagreb are buzzing with innovation as Rimac's Verne robotaxis hit the roads for testing. Croatia's homegrown startup Verne is shaking up the autonomous vehicle industry, redefining what we thought was possible with fully autonomous vehicles.
As The Croatian Business Daily reveals, Verne has been hard at work on an ambitious urban mobility project. They're ramping up efforts in key areas of this futuristic endeavor. The process of approval for these game-changing prototypes is underway, factory construction in Lučko near Zagreb is progressing swiftly, and testing activities of the service and autonomous driving system throughout Zagreb arebeing intensified.
Marko Pejković, CEO of Verne, explains that prototype validation is in the works, which is one of the steps announced within Croatia's National Recovery and Resilience Plan. These prototypes are meticulously testing various components of the vehicle - including powertrain performance, braking efficiency, aerodynamics, sensor functionality, in-vehicle multimedia systems, and more. Each prototype will receive approval from an independent body based on the submitted technical and design specifications - which Verne has already complied with.
Up the Ante with Autonomous Driving and User Experience in Zagreb

In close collaboration with technology partner Mobiley, Verne has been road-testing autonomous driving systems in Zagreb since June last year. Test vehicles, complete with safety drivers, have already navigated busy city areas, including the city center, Novi Zagreb, Zagreb Airport, and various other locations, covering approximately 90 square kilometers in total. The entire city of Zagreb was mapped, requiring over 500 hours of driving and more than 11,700 kilometers traveled in all weather conditions.
Recently, these Verne robotaxis tests expanded to include a user application for hailing a ride and an admin portal - a system to monitor the entire fleet. This step marks a significant advancement in integrating the platform, fully developed in-house, into the test vehicles.

"With this move, we're stepping up the game by not only testing autonomous driving but also the entire user experience," Pejković shared. "We'll noticeably increase the scope of these tests this autumn, further enhance the fleet of Verne robotaxis, and continue to test the service and user experience thoroughly, aiming for ultimate safety. Remaining at this stage, the tests are still being conducted with safety drivers," he added.
Factory Construction in High Gear

Concurrently, technology development, vehicle construction, and on-the-ground testing are underway. The factory to produce these autonomous electric vehicles is situated in Lučko, and construction began at the start of the year. It's progressing rapidly, with the basic structure of the 28,500 square meter Verne factory already complete. All load-bearing columns and 95% of the roof beams have been installed, and the roof covering installation will begin in early April.
Upon completion, the factory will house the latest technology for the production, assembly, and testing of Verne robotaxis, creating up to 400 new jobs. The plan is for Verne’s vehicles to be manufactured at the Zagreb factory and ultimately exported to global markets.
