Salmon preservation initiative "Save the Salmon" debuts in Kamchatka

Kamchatka Krai Introduces Unique Salmon Conservation Project

Residents and visitors in Kamchatka Krai can now contribute to the protection of Pacific salmon by participating in a new ecological service called "Save the Salmon." The initiative, launched on the regional government services portal gosuslugi41.ru, allows participants to choose the species and quantity of salmon to be raised, with funding due by May 11, 2025.

Once applications are processed, fish hatcheries will commence their work. The project, part of a larger program to preserve the Pacific salmon population, is expected to digitally revolutionize ecological projects in Russia.

Nikolai Kiselyov, Deputy Chairman of the Kamchatka Krai Government and Minister of Digital Development, praised the project as a unique undertaking, not only for the Far East but for the nation as a whole. The initiative is a collaborative effort between the Northeastern branch of FGBU 'Glavrybvod', the Kamchatka Krai government, the Ministry of Fisheries, and the Ministry of Digital Development.

The ceremonial release of the fry into the natural environment is scheduled for May 19-29, 2025, with the first ceremony taking place at the "Malki" fish hatchery on May 19. Participants will receive electronic diplomas in their personal accounts on gosuslugi41.ru, and legal entities and individual entrepreneurs can place their logos among the project partners.

The key advantage of the project lies in its full digitalization—the first ecological project in Russia implemented through a regional government services portal. Participants can monitor the fry's growth online through "Glavrybvod" resources. The project is intended to run until 2030 and will be held annually according to the salmon's biological cycle.

Digitalization can significantly aid salmon conservation efforts by monitoring fish populations, creating detailed habitat maps, and engaging communities through social media. While this project is not the first of its kind in terms of conservation methods, the digital aspect makes it pioneering in the Russian context.

Participants can volunteer, fundraise, participate in research, or simply advocate for sustainable salmon conservation strategies. Future updates on the project and its impact on the Pacific salmon population will be shared in the months to come.

  1. The innovative "Save the Salmon" project in Kamchatka Krai is set to revolutionize environmental-science in Russia, as it will utilize data-and-cloud-computing and technology to digitally monitor Pacific salmon populations, creating detailed habitat maps, and engage communities through social media.
  2. As the project progresses, participants can use data-and-cloud-computing to track the growth of the salmon fry online through resources provided by FGBU 'Glavrybvod'.
  3. As the first ecological project in Russia implemented through a regional government services portal, this unique program, focusing on climate-change and salmon conservation, demonstrates the significant role technology can play in scientific initiatives, especially within the field of environmental-science.
