Improving Mobile Network Coverage in Rhineland-Palatinate
Citizens in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, are invited to participate in a nationwide mobile network measurement week starting on May 23rd. The initiative, led by the Federal Network Agency and dubbed "Germany Checks Its Network," aims to gather firsthand data on mobile network coverage, especially in rural areas.
Participants can download the Federal Network Agency's broadband measurement app to record their mobile network coverage. The collected data will help improve the quality of mobile network coverage, anonymized and integrated into the dead zone map of the Gigabit Land Register.
"This valuable data provides a more authenticated representation of the user experience with mobile networks than the officially reported figures of telecommunications companies," explained Rhineland-Palatinate's Minister of Digitization, Dörte Schall (SPD). "Real grassroots measurement becomes possible with the mobile network measurement week and the app of the Federal Network Agency."
In 2021, a similar initiative took place in North Rhine-Westphalia. Over 2,800 people participated and contributed nearly 1.6 million valid measurement points. According to the data, about 95% of the measurement points showed a supply with 4G or 5G mobile networks, while 3.2% only displayed 2G supply, and around 1.7% detected no network availability.
The initiative is part of Germany's broader strategy to achieve nationwide uninterrupted wireless voice and data services by 2026. However, specific updates on Rhineland-Palatinate are not mentioned in the available information.
