Slot Index Unveiled by ReelMetrics Highlights Attraction of High-Roller Gamers to Specific Games

Unleashing the Power of Top Gaming Titles with the ReelHot Index!

Whether you're a gaming enthusiast or an operator in the industry, get ready to take your slots game to the next level! Introducing the ReelHot Index, which debuts today on our website, revolutionizing the world of slot analytics!

The ReelHot Index, a product of ReelMetrics, combines monthly listings of top-performing slot titles with insights into player engagement, grouped by their bankrolls and playing frequency. By focusing on spins per hour, theoretical win, and average bet for top-ranked titles in each player segment, this index shines a spotlight on the most popular slot games across three distinct player groups.

Nick Hogan, co-founder and CEO of ReelMetrics, says this unique blend of data points addresses a "critical industrial deficiency" by providing a gaming-industry segmentation model that aligns game performance with player behavior.

Hogan, along with ReelMetrics Chief Financial Officer William Schoofs and former Caesars executive and ReelMetrics Chairman John Boushy, founded the company over a decade ago. The company quickly grew into the world's largest aggregator of gaming data. About five years ago, ReelMetrics pivoted its focus to gathering data on player behavior.

"We began by aggregating configs and indexed performance data," Hogan explains, "but realized that, from an insight perspective, this model runs aground pretty quickly. The more data we ingested and analyzed, the more questions we had. As soon as we injected behavior, everything began to pop."

Based on over half a billion slot machines, tens of millions of player profiles, billions of gaming sessions, and almost a trillion dollars worth of bets, the ReelHot Index will highlight premium slot titles, core games, physical reels, and video poker throughout the year. New reports for premium and core indexes will appear six times a year, while physical reels and video poker indexes will be published quarterly.

The index is fueled by ReelMetrics' Cupid Segmentation Model, placing players into one of three tiers:

  1. Segment A: High-value players who play frequently, rapidly, and at high bet levels. This group makes up only 3 to 5 percent of the player population but contributes 25 to 40 percent of total slot revenue.
  2. Segment B: Medium-value players who play frequently at moderate rates and with higher-than-average bets. This segment represents 25 to 30 percent of players and generates 55 to 60 percent of slot revenue.
  3. Segment C: Lower-value players who visit infrequently and play at low-intensity levels. This segment covers 65 to 75 percent of players, producing less than 20 percent of slot revenue.

To illustrate the importance of a gaming-industry segmentation model, Hogan points to the nearly 80 percent failure rate of slot titles making their way to market. By focusing on strategic alignment of slot offerings with customer preferences, operators can increase the value they acquire from their investments.

The index's modeling is heavily based on Assortment and Merchandising practices, advising operators to adopt a demand-driven approach. Divide your inventory into:

  • A Staple Inventory of high-performing core and premium titles to attract Segment A and B players. Target 85 to 90 percent of your capital expense and operating budget toward this inventory.
  • A Test Inventory of new core and premium titles showcasing novel mechanics or other innovations. Aim to balance your budget between the Test Inventory and the Staple Inventory.
  • An Excess Inventory or "Boneyard" of core inventory reserved for Segment C players. Make sure the inventory in this category is as performative as possible, although it consists of games being phased out over time.

The index introduces a new concept called "Inner-Segment Resonance" (ISR), which measures a game's appeal to Segment A and B players on a scale ranging from "very high" to "low." A title with an ISR of "very high" resonates strongly with both segments, indicating the need for the floor to have enough machines to meet the broader demand.

Whether you're an operator looking to optimize your slot machine offerings or a player seeking out the most engaging and profitable titles, the ReelHot Index is a powerful tool for identifying high-performing games based on player engagement metrics.
