The legendary tournament, synonymous with the British summer, is geared to dazzle fans with a series of AI-infused features through its Wimbledon.com website and mobile app.
The action includes a brand-new, almost real-time feature, allowing fans to delve into the nitty-gritty of specific matches. A significant upgrade is on the horizon for the predictive tool determining the potential winners of every match.
Game On: Chat and More!
IBM, Wimbledon's tech partner for a whopping 36 years, partners once again for a milestone year in 2025.
Following the successful implementation of innovations like 2024's Catch Me Up, which employed Watsonx's generative AI to dish out player updates in the form of "cards" on the Wimbledon.com website or mobile app, and the 2023 introduction of AI commentary, the duo hopes this latest wave of advancements will offer novice and experienced fans deeper insights into the tournament.
As sports consumption habits evolve, IBM is up for the challenge of keeping pace. Said Kevin Farrar, Head of Sport Partnerships at IBM UK, "Our aim is to stay attuned to that change."
Exclusive to 2025 is Match Chat - an intelligent conversation interface enabling fans to dig into match-specific details in real-time. Built using Watsonx Orchestrate, the tool leverages AI agents and large language models, fine-tuned on the Wimbledon editorial style and tennis-related lingo.
Fans can utilize a host of pre-written prompts or put forth their own questions (such as, 'Who's serving the most aces in the match?' or 'Who's performing better in the match?') and receive a rapid response. IBM guarantees that the Match Chat training keeps the tool focused strictly on the tennis, so there's no chance it'll go off script, even if you inquire about the whereabouts of the tastiest strawberries!
"Our primary focus is always the fan. We believe this will be a truly engaging experience catering to diverse kinds of fans," noted Chris Clements, Digital Products Lead at the AELTC. "At its core, sport is about the human experience, the emotion – we're harnessing AI to relate those stories with enhanced effectiveness."
The recently introduced "Likelihood to Win" tool is also receiving an AI boost, now offering dynamic win percentage predictions even during the course of a single game, generated through AI-anchored analysis of player statistics, expert opinion, and match momentum.
Mark your calendars for the 2025 Wimbledon Championships, taking place from June 30 - July 13. Download the app on Android and iOS, or explore the action across the Wimbledon.com website, and get ready to experience tennis like never before!
