SK Hynix Smashes Quarterly Profit Records in Q2 2025

Soaring AI market sees SK Hynix posting record earnings

South Korean semiconductor giant SK Hynix has reported a record-breaking second quarter in 2025, with operating profit surging 69% year-over-year to 9.2 trillion won ($6.69 billion). This impressive result exceeded expectations and marked a significant milestone for the company [1].

Driving Forces Behind SK Hynix's Success

The robust demand for memory chips, particularly high-bandwidth memory (HBM), has been a key factor in SK Hynix's profitability. The AI industry, in particular, has fuelled this demand, with HBM chips being a critical component in AI processors [1]. As a key supplier for Nvidia Corp, SK Hynix has been able to capitalise on the expanding market for AI infrastructure [1].

SK Hynix's technological edge in HBM, including the expansion of its 12-layer HBM 3E product, has positioned it as a preferred supplier for AI and high-performance computing applications [2]. The company plans to double HBM sales year-over-year, reinforcing its leadership in this high-growth segment [2].

Growth in both the server and PC segments has also contributed significantly to shipment growth, supporting higher revenues and margins [2]. Proactive investment and supply chain management have allowed SK Hynix to maintain strong product competitiveness and mass production capabilities [2].

Even though average selling prices (ASP) for NAND products declined, the strength in HBM and DRAM segments more than offset this weakness [2].

Challenges and Risks Ahead

Despite its strong performance, SK Hynix faces challenges such as foreign currency losses due to the depreciation of the U.S. dollar against the Korean won and potential disruptions from U.S. export controls affecting China [2]. There are also threats from proposed U.S. tariffs on semiconductor imports, which could impact future profitability [1].

SK Hynix's Position in the Market

SK Hynix has overtaken Samsung Electronics to become the world’s biggest memory chip maker in terms of quarterly profit—a historic shift largely attributed to SK Hynix’s dominance in HBM, a segment experiencing explosive growth due to AI [1]. Samsung, in contrast, has experienced a dramatic 56% drop in second-quarter earnings during the same period [1].

While both companies compete in DRAM and NAND, SK Hynix's focused investment and execution in HBM—the fastest-growing segment—has given it a clear advantage where it matters most for AI compute [1]. Samsung, on the other hand, is contending with softer demand in commodity memory and has lagged in scaling HBM production.

As the AI memory market heats up, competition is expected to intensify, with Goldman Sachs recently downgrading SK Hynix’s stock, citing future risks from increased HBM competition and potential price declines in 2026 [1].

Outlook for SK Hynix

Nvidia suppliers like SK Hynix are expected to continue enjoying strong demand for memory chips due to the high memory content needed to make AI chips functional, according to TechInsights Inc vice chairman and senior researcher G. Dan Hutcheson [3].

In April, SK Hynix took the lead in DRAM revenues with a 36 percent market share, surpassing South Korean rival Samsung Electronics Co for the first time [4].

Summary: SK Hynix's record quarterly profits were driven by AI-driven demand for HBM chips, technological leadership, and proactive investment, elevating it above Samsung Electronics in the booming AI memory segment. However, geopolitical risks and intensifying competition could impact its market position moving forward [1][2].

The AI industry, being a critical consumer of high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips, has fueled the demand for SK Hynix's memory chips, contributing to the company's record quarterly profits. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a significant driver for SK Hynix's growth, as HBM chips are essential components in AI processors.
