Solar car reservations surge to 20,000 for organization's 'Sion' model electric vehicle

The Sono Sion, a groundbreaking solar electric vehicle developed by Sono Group N.V., is set to revolutionize mobility by integrating 456 solar cells into its body panels. This innovative design aims to add up to 245 kilometers of additional weekly range under ideal sunlight conditions, making it a hybrid approach combining solar technology with conventional EV battery systems [2].

After unveiling the production-ready model in July 2022, featuring improvements in design and quality over earlier prototypes, the Sion is now poised for production. Initially planned for 2022 at the ex-Saab NEVS facility, the production has since shifted to Finland’s Valmet Automotive in 2023. Valmet Automotive, an experienced contract manufacturer for premium brands, will help Sono scale production efficiently [1].

With ambitious manufacturing plans, Sono aims to produce over 250,000 units over seven years, reflecting strong manufacturing ambitions [1]. As of now, the company has reported over 20,000 direct consumer reservations for the Sion, targeting an affordable segment of the market with a net sales price of approximately €25,126 [1].

The integration of solar cells in the Sion helps reduce reliance on traditional charging infrastructure, offering a "truly limitless" range enhancement in suitable conditions. This feature, along with unique innovations like the living moss air filtration system, positions the Sion as a unique product in the eco-friendly vehicle market [2].

While solar-assisted electric vehicles are currently more hybrid solutions than fully autonomous solar-powered vehicles, the technology is steadily advancing. Photovoltaics and materials like perovskite cells promise future efficiency improvements, and the broad mass-market impact still depends on these ongoing advancements [2][3].

Sono Group's stock is traded on the OTCQB under the symbol SEVCF. The company's disruptive solar technology can be seamlessly integrated into various vehicle architectures, including third-party OEM cars, buses, refrigerated vehicles, and recreational vehicles. This versatility suggests the Sion has the potential to become the world's first Solar Electric Vehicle (SEV) for the masses, democratizing access to solar-assisted electric vehicles.
