Solar-driven weekender, Optima e14, under the spotlight for its all-electric design
Ready for a glimpse at the cutting-edgeOptima e14 electric boat? This sleek, solar-powered marvel is set to leave its mark on the boating world.
Manufactured by the ingenious minds at British electric boatbuilder Optima, the e14 is a 46ft stabilized monohull motor cruiser that builds upon the innovative features from their original e10 prototype. With a cathedral hull platform as its base, this all-electric semi-displacement weekender is as practical as it is stylish.
Initially designed as an open boat, the e14 sports a solar-panelled hardtop that offers a plethora of possibilities. A fully enclosed wheelhouse version may follow suit, providing a more sheltered experience for those who crave it.
Featuring spacious walkaround decks, the e14 boasts a 10-tonne displacement, a maximum beam of 14ft 9in (4.5m), and a draft of 3ft 3in (1m). The modular cockpit furniture allows owners to tailor the layout to their preferences, while accommodations below deck include a double berth, sofa, and shower-room forward, as well as an optional double berth beneath the aft sunpad.
But what about the e14's electric range? As of now, the quoted range for the e14 on a single charge at 10 knots is estimated to be around 80nm. Powered by a 300kWh li-ion battery bank, the e14 relies on a single 100kW electric motor for propulsion, though more robust options may become available, promising top speeds of up to 18 knots. The e14 supports fast-charging and is compatible with existing marina infrastructure, including 16A and 32A systems. Solar panels can be integrated into the hardtop, ensuring a renewable energy source that's built right in.
Constructed using sustainable methods, the lightweight resin-infused hull and deck will be reinforced with natural flax fibers and recycled materials bonded with bio-resins. With a price tag of approximately €1.5m excluding VAT, the first deliveries of the e14 are slated for late 2025/26.
