Title: Empowering Voices in Chaos: Digital Sound Processing Revolutionizes Community Radio Journalism in South Kivu

By: Justin BAFUNYEMBAKA, Program Manager at RATECO/SUD-KIVU

In an audacious stride for community radio journalism, South Kivu, Congo, witnesses a breakthrough as local journalists conquer digital sound processing with Adobe Audition. This momentous accomplishment, unfolded through a collaborative initiative by Réseau des Radios et Télévisions Communautaires (RATECO) and Cultural Survival, aimed to fortify community radio journalists' abilities to collect and disseminate quality information.

Community radios serve as valuable bridges uniting communities and leaders in addressing essential issues vital to democracy. Amidst the conflict and human rights violations plaguing this region, these resilient journalists form the eyes and ears of the people, relaying critical information to local, national, and global audiences.

Facing obstacles in their pursuit of truth, RATECO and Cultural Survival combined forces to empower six rural community radio stations, arming their journalists with Adobe Audition software. This project also focused on creating radio programs and public service announcements in various local Indigenous languages, addressing topics such as the DRC elections, climate change, violence, and the struggle against insecurity. These broadcasts aimed to strengthen democracy and encourage informed citizen participation.

These progressions have significantly transformed the landscape of journalism. Mazombo Katchelewa François, a journalist with Radio Bulikoko in Shabunda, articulates his transformation: "Before the training, I was clueless about digital sound processing. Our newsroom operateed with rough, unpolished sounds from the field and flung them onto the radio... We've now received machinery and flash discs that help us refine the sounds in our radios. We've also acquired wisdom we take pride in."

Destin Mubalama, Director of the community radio station in Kamole, echoed the positive impact the training had on his reporting: "In the past, due to a lack of resources, I discarded numerous pieces of valuable information onto the air, facing numerous complaints from the listeners about the poor quality of the information broadcast. However, since my training, I can process and deliver information using Adobe Audition software, thereby improving the quality and gaining the interest of our listeners."

The influence of this project reverberates beyond the newsroom. Julienne M'badesirhe, a resident of Cishebeyi village, discovered their political rights through spots on the electoral law broadcast on Nshoko community radio: "I was unaware that the DRC's electoral law favors political parties that include women in decision-making positions. I've decided to engage in politics, particularly in opposition parties, as my voice will finally be heard."

The success story of this project underscores the indispensable role of community radios in fostering democracy and amplifying the voices of the marginalized. By arming journalists with the tools and knowledge to produce high-quality content, this project has fortified the suppressed and fostered greater understanding and participation in the democratic process.
