SpaceX's Starlink satellite internet service, the world's largest constellation with over 6,750 satellites in orbit, experienced a global outage on Thursday night. The outage, which lasted approximately 2.5 hours, was due to a failure of key internal software services that operate the core network, according to Michael Nicolls, VP of Starlink Engineering.

The outage affected thousands of users across multiple continents, including North America, Europe, and parts of Asia. Notably, the disruption also impacted important users like the Ukrainian military.

Elon Musk, the CEO of SpaceX, commented on the incident on the social media platform X, saying service will be restored shortly and apologizing for the outage. Starlink's satellite internet service, capable of providing about 600 Gbps throughput over India, is also authorized in India, following a five-year approval from the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe).

In response to the outage, SpaceX is actively investigating and committed to fixing the root issue to prevent recurrence. The company, through its CEO Elon Musk and Starlink’s VP of engineering Michael Nicolls, has apologized for the outage and stated that they are fully committed to rooting out the cause to ensure this does not happen again. Musk specifically mentioned that SpaceX will remedy the root cause to prevent future disruptions.

This represents a software infrastructure problem at the network core rather than hardware or satellite failure. SpaceX’s commitment focuses on improving the reliability of these internal systems. Nicolls also mentioned that Starlink has now mostly recovered from the network outage.

Starlink is deeply committed to providing a highly reliable network and apologized for the temporary disruption in its service. The authorization granted by IN-SPACe allows Starlink Satellite Communications Private Limited (SSCPL) to provide satellite communication services in India. Starlink services are available in several countries, including Mongolia, Japan, the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Jordan, Yemen, Azerbaijan, and Sri Lanka.

  1. The global outage of SpaceX's Starlink satellite internet service, affecting users across multiple continents, highlighted the critical role the service plays, even for important users like the Ukrainian military, underscoring the importance of advancements in space-and-astronomy and technology to maintain these connections.
  2. As SpaceX works diligently to identify and fix the root cause of the recent outage, their focus is on enhancing the science behind their internal software services, ensuring the reliable operation of their network and adhering to commitments made in countries like India where they have received authorization for their service.
