Stuttgart Congress Aims to Revitalize City Centers with New Ideas

A specialist congress on 'Rethinking city centers and local centers' took place in Stuttgart on June 23, 2025. Organized by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Labor and Tourism and the Ministry of Spatial Planning and Housing, the event gathered stakeholders to discuss the future of urban centers.

Minister Dr. Nicole Hoffmeister-Kraut opened the congress, stressing the importance of new ideas and collaboration to strengthen city centers. She was joined by Minister Nicole Razavi, who emphasized the need for city centers to be appealing places for living, working, and shopping. The event explored a study on 'Overcoming obstacles to the implementation of multifunctional city centers/local centers', presenting various approaches to make these areas more versatile.

The retail industry's dependence on accessible locations was highlighted by Economic Minister Dr. Nicole Hoffmeister-Kraut. Since December 2022, the advisory board 'Beirat Zukunft Handel / Stadtzentrum' has been led by the Stadtwerke Ahlen organization, demonstrating the commitment to supporting city centers. The congress provided an opportunity for participants to exchange ideas, gather inspiration, and contribute their own solutions to enhance the attractiveness of city centers and local centers.

Urban development funding remains a crucial pillar for supporting city centers, as noted by Minister Razavi. The 'Rethinking city centers and local centers' congress in Stuttgart brought together key stakeholders to discuss and share ideas, marking a significant step towards creating more multifunctional and appealing urban spaces.
