SWEG Enhances Public Transport in Baden-Württemberg with Real-Time Tech

SWEG, a major transport operator in Baden-Württemberg, has rolled out new technology in its buses across Müllheim and Endingen. The upgrade, which includes new on-board computers and GPS transmitters, enables real-time tracking and data sharing, enhancing public transport's appeal and efficiency.

SWEG, a corporate group with over 1800 employees, operates bus and rail transport in the region. In 2018, it merged with the Hohenzollerische Landesbahn (HzL), further expanding its reach. The new technology, supplied by Hewlett-Packard (HP) through IVU Traffic Technologies AG, serves as the 'heart' of the communication system in SWEG's vehicles.

Drivers now have an easier operation and can issue a wider range of tickets. The SWEG bus control center gains real-time visibility of vehicles, thanks to the new hardware integrated into the operating control system. Real-time data is shared with the data hub of NVBW, feeding digital timetable information platforms like efa-bw.de and the 'Bus & Bahn' app of bwegt. In the future, this data could potentially be displayed at bus stops, pending the installation of display systems.

SWEG board member Dr. Thilo Grabo highlighted the benefits of the new technology, stating it enhances the attractiveness of public transport in the Müllheim and Kaiserstuhl areas.

SWEG's investment in new technology has improved real-time data availability and driver operations. This move is expected to boost public transport's appeal and efficiency in the region, with potential future enhancements like real-time data display at bus stops.
