Taliban Imposes Internet Shutdown in Afghanistan, Causing Widespread Disruption

The Taliban have imposed an internet shutdown in Afghanistan, causing widespread disruption and concern. The United Nations has condemned the move, describing it as a serious human rights violation, particularly affecting women and girls.

The blackout, the first since the Taliban's takeover in 2021, has left many Afghans stranded. Flights have been cancelled, with at least 14 grounded at Kabul airport alone, and the status of others uncertain. Banks, businesses, and even the post office have been impacted, as bank services are required for their operations. A bank worker in Kabul reported clients' inability to access online banking or withdraw cash.

The UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has urged the Taliban to restore internet and cell phone services, warning of potential harm to the Afghan people and economic stability. Despite the disruptions, Kam Air has managed to operate some flights, though delays have been reported.

The Taliban have not yet explained the internet shutdown, which has significantly disrupted daily life in Afghanistan. The UN and many Afghans await the restoration of connectivity to resume normal activities and mitigate the economic impact.
