Tesla Shifts Focus to AI5 and AI6 Chips, Retires Dojo Supercomputer Project

In a significant move, Tesla has decided to retire its Dojo supercomputer team and focus on the development of its new AI chips, the AI5 and AI6. This strategic shift towards simplification and unification was announced in August 2025.

The Dojo supercomputer, initially intended for Tesla's self-driving and humanoid robot projects, was first discussed by Elon Musk in 2019. However, the decision to retire Dojo indicates that Tesla believes a single AI chip design, the AI5 and its successor AI6, will deliver superior inference and training performance.

The AI6 chip, designed to be smarter, simpler to scale, and cost-effective, is expected to play a big role in various applications, including cars, robots, and data centers. Musk has stated that all development paths lead towards the AI6 chip.

The development of Tesla's Dojo supercomputer unit was discontinued, and the team has been reassigned or disbanded. Some members are now working on other Tesla tech projects, such as the recently promoted project called "Cortex," which Musk unveiled in August 2024. The status of the Cortex project, however, remains uncertain.

This shift comes at a time when Tesla is facing a decrease in EV sales. Despite this, Tesla is attempting to maintain faith in its AI vision, as demonstrated by its continued focus on AI development. This was evident in the rough June robotaxi launch in Austin, where Tesla put its energy into new chips called AI5 and AI6.

Elon Musk joked that "Dojo 3" just has a lot of AI6 chips working together. The focus is now solely on the AI6 chip at Tesla. The AI5 and AI6 chips are being manufactured by TSMC and Samsung.

It seems that Tesla's decision to retire Dojo and focus on the AI5 and AI6 chips is part of a broader strategy to streamline its operations and focus on versatile chips that can deliver superior performance across various applications.

In the world of AI and technology, Tesla continues to push boundaries and innovate, despite facing challenges in other areas of its business. The future of AI at Tesla looks promising with the development of the AI5 and AI6 chips.
