In a significant turn of events, Tesla Inc. has filed a federal lawsuit against Proception Inc., a Y Combinator-backed company known for its advancements in humanoid robotic hand technology. The lawsuit, Tesla Inc. v. Proception Inc. et al., Case No. 5:25-cv-04963, was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California on June 11, 2024.

According to the complaint, filed by Tesla's attorneys, Zhongjie "Jay" Li, a former Tesla engineer who was part of the Optimus program's sensor engineering team, is accused of misappropriating trade secrets related to Tesla's humanoid robot program. Li is said to have downloaded confidential files related to robotic hand development onto two personal smartphones and accessed internal systems just hours before his departure.

Tesla claims that Proception, which was incorporated six days after Li left Tesla, took a shortcut by theft, using the stolen data to accelerate their development process. The lawsuit cites violations under the Defend Trade Secrets Act and California's Uniform Trade Secrets Act, along with claims of unjust enrichment and improperly disrupting Tesla's existing or potential business relationships.

The lawsuit alleges that within five months, Proception claimed to have developed humanoid robotic hands that bear a "striking resemblance" to those built under Tesla's Optimus program. However, no new information about the new generation Optimus hand was presented at the event mentioned earlier.

As of now, Li and his company have not responded publicly to the lawsuit, and no legal counsel has appeared on their behalf in court filings. Tesla is seeking compensatory and exemplary damages, and a court order barring Li and Proception from using any of its proprietary materials.

It's important to note that, as of August 2025, there are no publicly available or credible search results indicating any lawsuit or accusations of trade secret theft involving Tesla and Proception related to the Optimus humanoid robot program. For authoritative information, one may consider checking official legal databases or Tesla’s official communications directly.

The case is currently ongoing, and further developments are expected to unfold in the coming months. Stay tuned for updates on this intriguing legal battle between Tesla and Proception.

  1. The lawsuit alleges that Proception, with the alleged help of Li, might have utilized artificial-intelligence and technology, including Tesla's confidential data on robotic hand development, to hasten their process in creating humanoid robotic hands.
  2. Tesla's advanced technology in the humanoid robotic hand sector, as showcased in the Optimus program, is seemingly at risk of being replicated, thanks to the alleged theft of trade secrets by Li and Proception, leveraging artificial-intelligence.
