Dave Grohl's One-of-a-Kind Gibson DG-335 Prototype Guitar Up for Sale

Dave Grohl, the bandleader of Foo Fighters, is parting ways with a significant piece of his guitar collection - his first Gibson DG-335 prototype guitar. This unique guitar, built in Gibson's Custom Shop in Nashville, has been listed for sale on Reverb for $300,000.

The DG-335 was Grohl's first signature model prototype, started in 2001 and fully delivered in 2005 by Gibson Nashville Custom Shop. The project was initiated after Grohl expressed interest in having his own signature guitar. The design of this prototype was partly influenced by Dave Grohl's favorite guitar: the Trini Lopez '67's signature ES-335.

This semi-hollow electric guitar features a maple body, a Pelham Blue finish, a set mahogany neck, and a rosewood fingerboard. The neck shape, pickups, and the choice of a more road-worthy tailpiece than the original Trini's trapeze were part of the design process for this prototype. The guitar comes with a fitted Anvil hard case, described as "pretty much bulletproof."

Grohl actively used this DG-335 prototype extensively for recording, touring, and live performances with Foo Fighters starting from around 2005. Notably, he used this guitar in prominent events such as the Live Earth performance, where his signature DG-335 was prominently featured. The guitar combined the iconic semi-hollow body tone and resonance of the original ES-335 with modifications tailored to Grohl's playing style, giving it a distinct sound and playability beneficial for alternative rock.

The DG-335 was heavily used on stage and in the studio between 2005 and 2007, including on the album "Echoes, Silence, Patience, Grace" and during the tour from 2005 until 2007. The current owner, who describes Dave Grohl as one of the most wonderful human beings they have ever known, will also include the guitar strap used from 2005 to 2007, which is "disgusting, dried sweat-soaked."

The prototype was approved for the first limited production run of 300 guitars in 2005. It features twin humbuckers and was hand-made at the Nashville Gibson Custom Shop. This DG 335 prototype represents a personalized evolution of the classic ES-335 design, a crucial piece of Dave Grohl's guitar arsenal.

For fans and collectors, this is an opportunity to own a piece of rock history. The DG-335 prototype is now available for purchase on Reverb.
