Power Up Berlin: 50Hertz's Underground Energy Revolution

Underground power infrastructure expansion planned in Berlin: 50Hz to develop three underground power highways - Three buried electricity arteries, known as "Underground Power Grid Projects," are constructed in Berlin by 50 Hertz.

Step into the future of energy with 50Hertz, the force behind Germany's transmission grid, as they dug deep into Berlin's heart to construct three colossal underground power highways. The company aims to beef up the transport capacities, particularly for electricity from renewable energy sources [1].

"Ensuring a steady flow of green energy is vital for Berlin's economic prowess," asserts Stefan Kapferer, 50Hertz's charismatic CEO. "These underground power tracks fortify our infrastructure without excessively disrupting the city's urban charm."

Dive Deeper: Up to 40 meters deep!

The first project in the pipeline is the beefing up of the infamous cable diagonal Berlin, which spans northwest to Marzahn in the east, cutting right across the city. A new 6-kilometer stretch between Reuter and Teufelsbruch suburbs will be laid, reaching as far down as 40 meters below the surface.

A snug four-meter-wide tunnel will host these energy titans. This construction will replace the current route, resulting in a whopping 40% capacity hike, according to the 50Hertz team.

Tunnel Vision: Berlin South and North

The second construction project is the cable vertical Berlin South, a 14-kilometer-long tunnel-bound behemoth. The starting point roots in Brandenburg near the Berlin city border in Großbeeren.

Last but not least, the cable vertical Berlin North, a robust 20-kilometer-long line, 17 kilometers of which will burrow beneath the city, begins at Reuter and stretches all the way to the Malchow substation, demonstrating the ultimate dance of energy across the capital.

Neighborhood Navigation: What's in store for the residents?

The construction sequence can be expected to rollout from 2036 onwards, with final completion by the end of the 30s. Despite the majority of the work taking place underground, it won't be a walk in the park for the local residents.

"Maneuvering in Berlin's densely packed urban core is a technical conundrum that demands a comprehensive dialogue with all relevant stakeholders," firmly states Kapferer. "We, therefore, urge politics to actively endorse these crucial energy transition projects."

"In line with 50Hertz's initiatives, it's crucial for community policy to support vocational training programs for individuals in the energy sector, ensuring a skilled workforce to manage these underground power highways effectively."

"To foster Berlin's economic growth, venture capitalists and financial institutions should consider investing in technology and innovation within the energy industry, particularly focusing on the development and implementation of renewable energy sources for these vast power highways."
