XPeng's Mona Series: A Success Story in China and Beyond
XPeng, a leading Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, has been making waves with its Mona series. Currently, the Mona series offers one model, the M03, which hit the Chinese market on August 27, 2024, with a starting price of RMB 119,800 ($16,820).
The M03 has been a consistent seller, delivering over 10,000 units for 12 consecutive months. In August alone, the M03 delivered 15,334 units, accounting for 40.66 percent of XPeng's monthly deliveries. From January to August, the electric sedan delivered 117,443 units, accounting for 43.24 percent of XPeng's total deliveries during the same period.
XPeng's primary battery suppliers are CALB, Eve Energy, and BYD, with CALB dominating the majority share. The M03 utilizes blade batteries based on lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry supplied by BYD's battery unit FinDreams Battery. Eve Energy supplies the batteries for the P7+ and 2024 XPeng models.
In an effort to reduce reliance on a single supplier and lower costs, XPeng is reportedly looking to switch battery suppliers for its long-range models. However, the exact identity of the new supplier for these future models remains unclear from the available information.
Meanwhile, XPeng appears to be developing a second model in its Mona lineup, an SUV. The company also plans to launch mass-market Mona series in Europe in 2026, with the aim of expanding its global presence.
In the Chinese battery market, both CALB and BYD have been making significant strides. In August, CALB ranked third with 5.03 GWh of battery installations, holding an 8.05 percent market share. BYD, on the other hand, ranked second with a power battery installation volume of 13.02 GWh, capturing a 20.85 percent market share.
This news underscores XPeng's commitment to delivering high-quality, affordable electric vehicles, and its strategic moves to stay competitive in the ever-evolving EV market. With the launch of the Mona series in Europe in 2026, we can expect to see XPeng making its mark globally.
