Uber and DoorDash Embrace Drone Delivery

In a bid to revolutionise the delivery landscape, Uber and DoorDash are venturing into drone delivery services.

Uber, the ride-hailing giant, has announced plans to start piloting drone delivery in select markets by the end of this year. The company's investment in drone delivery service provider, Flytrex, marks Uber's foray into drone deliveries for the first time.

Uber's move to automate deliveries is aimed at reducing costs and increasing demand for the service. By employing drones, delivery times can be significantly shortened, making the service more efficient. Moreover, drones are more environmentally friendly, contributing to a greener delivery service.

Uber has not yet revealed the specific markets for its drone delivery pilot, but the company has expressed its intention to start using drones for deliveries at the beginning of next year in San Diego, California.

Meanwhile, DoorDash, a leading on-demand food delivery service, is also partnering with Wing for drone delivery. The collaboration has already seen the successful rollout of drone delivery services in Christiansburg, Virginia, and Frisco, Texas. Over the past three years, DoorDash's partner, Flytrex, has landed over 200,000 meals at suburban households.

Flytrex is one of the leading drone delivery companies in the U.S. and one of four companies whose drones have been cleared by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to fly outside the line of sight of remote operators.

Uber did not disclose the amount of its investment in Flytrex, but the company's decision to invest in drone delivery underscores its commitment to innovation and growth in the delivery sector. Both Uber and DoorDash are investing in automating some deliveries, signalling a shift towards a more technologically advanced delivery industry.

As Uber and DoorDash work towards implementing drone delivery, they will collaborate with restaurants and retailers to ensure a seamless transition to this new mode of delivery. The companies aim to make drone delivery a convenient and efficient option for consumers, bringing faster, cheaper, and greener delivery services to the forefront.
