UK Sees Historic Shift: Electrified Vehicles Top Internal-Combustion Engine Sales
In a significant shift, electrified vehicles have overtaken internal-combustion engine models in UK market share for the first time, according to September 2025 figures. This comes as petrol registrations saw a 2.4% growth, the first monthly improvement since March 2024.
The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) reported a strong September, with 312,891 passenger cars registered, a 13.7% increase year on year. This is the best September result since 2020. All market sectors contributed to this growth, with fleets seeing a 16.9% increase and private consumers driving an 8.9% growth.
Electrified vehicles led the monthly registrations, with 158,972 units delivered. Battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) had their best-ever month, with 72,779 units registered, a 29.1% increase year on year. Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) also experienced a strong month, with 38,308 units registered, a 56.4% improvement compared to the same month last year.
The UK's Electric Car Grant, introduced in July 2025, saw eligible models increase their registrations by 36% in September 2025, compared to a 26.9% improvement for non-qualifying BEVs.
In the first nine months of 2025, a total of 1,578,172 passenger cars were registered in the UK, up 4.2% compared to the same period in 2024. Despite petrol registrations growing in September, electrified vehicles continue to gain dominance, indicating a significant shift in the UK car market.
