Heed this warning: refunding accidental PayPal deposits could be a sneaky scam

Unidentified funds inflow

Got a surprise PayPal deposit in your account? Think twice before sending it back, or you might end up footing the bill! Scammers are now using a cunning trick to empty your wallet.

If you've received an unexpected payment on PayPal, be wary if you don't recognize the sender. Consumer centers in NRW and Rhineland-Palatinate warn of a new scam that's been cropping up.

This scam goes something like this: Someone, let's call them "Scammer Sam," sends you an alleged accidental payment on PayPal. Then, Scammer Sam immediately asks for a refund by requesting it as a "Friends and Family" transaction. If you comply, you're in for a rude awakening. Once you send the money back, you can't get it back. At least not in the "Friends and Family" transaction mode.

Watch out! The money they send back is theirs to keep. Meanwhile, Scammer Sam opens a dispute for their supposed accidental payment made through the "Goods and Services" transaction mode, claiming their money back. PayPal awkwardly returns the funds to Scammer Sam, taking it straight out of your account.

Uh-oh! The scammers have tricked you, and you're left empty-handed. Here's the kicker: there's no way to get your money back. So, be on your guard!

Smart Moves

Don't let this catch you off guard. To protect yourself, initiate the refund using the original transaction, not a new one. On the PayPal app, you can send the amount back using the "Send Refund" option, while on the browser, it's "Refund this amount."

Want to know more about how to execute the refund? Check out the PayPal website for detailed instructions. Better safe than sorry!

Stay vigilant out there, folks!
