Unveiling the Mystery behind Alien: Romulus' Unexpected Appearance
Got your tune, mate? Let's dive into the buzz about the latest flick, Alien: Romulus. Despite mostly positive vibes and a decent start, there's one topic that's taking center stage in all the chatter - and that's the appearance of a familiar face, or rather, a familiar look.
In this new tale, our heroine Rain encounters a synthetic being named Rook, who bears a striking resemblance to Ian Holm, the actor who played the treacherous synthetic, Ash, in the original Alien. Given he's just a robot and all, it ain't too far-fetched, ya know? But here's the twist - ol' Ash never got to make a grand return, so it sets the stage for some innovation.
Fede Alvarez, the co-writer and director, spilled the beans to Variety, explaining that they aimed for a sense of fairness. With Lance Henriksen and Michael Fassbender having their share of screen time in the franchise, they figured it was high time Ian Holm got his chance, despite the small issue of him having passed away in '20.
To get Rook looking like Ash, they didn't go the easy route of reproducing Holm's acting talent, 'cause no tech can capture an actor's true essence. Instead, they created a different character that resembled Holm, using an animatronic head and torso with his likeness, operated by puppeteers on set. Daniel Betts provided the voice and specific facial movements, which were then fine-tuned with CGI in post-production. An AI was also employed to mimic Holm's voice for the more subtle nuances.
Alvarez and Scott ensured the Holm family was on board with the idea, and they were more than supportive. Sophie de Stempel, Holm's widow, shared Holm's sentiments that he felt overlooked in Hollywood late in his career, and she expressed her belief that he would have loved the chance to reprise his role in Alien.
The whole shebang was much more complex than just hiring an actor, which is why Alvarez believes this technological approach should only be used sparingly. Alien: Romulus is now in theaters, and if you're keen on catching a glimpse of Holm once more, this is your chance!
