US Measles Outbreak: 1,046 Cases Confirmed Across 30 States, According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

Measles cases in the United States have climbed to 1,046, according to updated data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released on Friday. The virus has been confirmed in 30 states, including Alaska, Arkansas, California, and Washington, among others.

Infectious disease experts have expressed concern that the U.S. may surpass the 2019 total of 1,274 cases, which were confirmed over the course of a year. This year's total also represents the second highest case count in 25 years, according to CDC data.

Approximately 12% of measles patients in the U.S. this year have been hospitalized, with the majority being under the age of 19. According to CDC data, about 96% of measles cases are among those who are unvaccinated or have an unknown vaccination status. Meanwhile, 1% of cases are among those who have received only one dose of the measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) vaccine, and 2% among those who received the recommended two doses.

At least three deaths have been reported this year, two among children and one among an adult. All three individuals were unvaccinated.

In related news, an unvaccinated traveler with measles may have exposed people at Denver International Airport and a nearby hotel on May 13. The individual stayed at the Quality Inn and Suites that night and took a shuttle back to the airport the following day, boarding a domestic flight. Those who may have been exposed on either flight will be notified by health officials.

Similarly, a resident of King County in Washington state was infectious while traveling through Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and a medical center. A non-resident with measles attended the Shakira concert at MetLife stadium in New Jersey last week, potentially exposing attendees. Although the concert occurred on May 16, health officials warn that people may develop symptoms as late as June 6. No associated cases have been identified so far.

The CDC recommends two doses of the MMR vaccine, the first at ages 12 to 15 months and the second between 4 and 6 years old. One dose offers 93% effectiveness, and two doses offer 97% effectiveness against measles, according to the CDC. The agency declared measles eliminated from the U.S. in 2000 due to a highly effective vaccination program, but vaccination rates have been declining in recent years. Anti-vaccination sentiment and misinformation, such as the link between the MMR vaccine and autism, have been identified as contributors to the low vaccination rates nationwide.

Health experts warn that the increasing number of measles cases is a result of the decrease in vaccination coverage in certain communities, increased international travel, clustering of unvaccinated individuals, delayed or missed routine vaccinations, and the highly contagious nature of measles. These factors have contributed to the significant rise in measles cases nationwide.
