Utilizing the older OpenAI model: A guide to employing ChatGPT-4o rather than GPT-5
In a recent development, OpenAI has made it possible for ChatGPT Plus subscribers to re-enable ChatGPT-4o, the previous AI model, on ChatGPT.com. Here's a simple guide to help you access this feature.
- Open ChatGPT.com in your web browser and log in to your account.
- Click your username or profile picture in the bottom-left corner.
- Select Settings from the menu that appears.
- Go to the General section in Settings.
- Toggle on the "Show legacy models" option to enable access to older models.
- Close the settings and in the model selector dropdown, choose ChatGPT-4o from the legacy models list.
By following these steps, you can re-enable ChatGPT-4o and use it instead of the default GPT-5 model. This option is only available for ChatGPT Plus subscribers, who are required to pay for OpenAI's chatbot service.
Please note that this reintroduction of ChatGPT-4o does not guarantee the return of other discontinued legacy models. OpenAI has not yet confirmed any plans regarding this matter.
The GPT-5 AI model, which was recently unveiled by Sam Altman and co last Thursday, has received significant criticism on social media due to its perceived inefficiency compared to its predecessor, GPT-4. Some users have found the new model to be less efficient, leading to the demand for the return of ChatGPT-4o.
This option to re-enable ChatGPT-4o syncs across platforms, including the web, Mac app, iPhone, and iPad apps, after restarting the app if necessary. However, it's important to note that the reintroduced GPT-4 model is hidden in the settings of ChatGPT, so you may need to adjust your settings to access it.
