OpenAI's Stargate Norway, the company's first AI data center in Europe, is under construction in Kvandal, near Narvik, Northern Norway. This advanced facility, a joint venture owned 50/50 by Nscale and Aker ASA, is set to revolutionize the AI landscape in Europe.
Located in the Arctic, the facility will initially deliver 230 MW of power capacity, with plans to expand to 290 MW. By the end of 2026, Stargate Norway is expected to run on 100,000 NVIDIA GPUs.
Nscale, a British AI cloud infrastructure provider, is responsible for designing and building the site. OpenAI, on the other hand, will act as an off-taker, purchasing capacity from the data center.
The facility will be powered entirely by renewable energy, incorporating advanced cooling solutions such as closed-loop, direct-to-chip liquid cooling to maximize efficiency. Additionally, the excess heat produced by the GPUs will be reused to support local low-carbon industries, linking the facility to Norway’s tradition of leveraging clean energy for industrial value.
This initiative aligns with Europe’s goal to increase AI compute sovereignty, and Norway’s AI ecosystem, including startups and researchers, will have priority access to the center. The Vera Rubin rack systems, potential candidates for the GPUs to be deployed at the facility, are set to make their debut next year.
