The price advantage over traditional taxis is fueled by "better passenger utilization at lower costs," as Uber explains. This peak usage delivers earning opportunities for providers and, as Uber claims, the average commission rate is within the low-double digits, making independent operation feasible.

However, a study sponsored by Heidelberg City Council hints that the cut-rate prices are mainly due to subsidies. Allegedly, Uber sponsors its drivers with around 50 cents for every euro a passenger pays.
