Woolworths Introduces 30% Recycled Plastic Bread Bags

Woolworths, a prominent retailer in South Africa, has introduced its own brand of bread bags crafted from 30% recycled plastic. The bags, developed as part of the company's sustainability strategy, are now employed across six popular bread products.

The innovative bags are produced by Amcor using advanced recycling technology via the mass balance approach. They are currently in use for Soft White Sandwich and High Fibre Multigrain Sandwich, among other products.

Woolworths anticipates saving around 50,000 kilograms of virgin plastic each year with this initiative. The bags comprise 30% recycled PET, primarily sourced from used bottles. This move is in line with the company's commitment to reducing plastic waste and fostering a circular economy.

Woolworths' new recycled bread bags are a notable stride towards sustainability. The company expects to conserve a substantial amount of virgin plastic annually, contributing to its Good Business Journey. The bags are part of Woolworths' own brand products, developed internally as a response to the growing demand for eco-friendly options.
