Celebrating Two Decades: YouTube's Meteoric Rise and Future Prospects
YouTube is turning 20 with a bang, boasting impressive stats that highlight its skyrocketing popularity and announcing a slew of new features, such as the ability for users to create their own multiviewers.
As it reaches this momentous milestone, CNBC reports data from Moffett Nathanson suggesting that YouTube could be worth as much as a staggering $550 billion as a standalone company. In fact, it's projected to become the largest media company by revenue in 2025, surpassing The Walt Disney Co. for the first time.
Nielsen's data paints a similar picture, revealing that YouTube's content accounted for 12% of overall TV viewing in March, making it the top reported media distributor for the second consecutive month. This followed a previous best share of TV viewing of 11.6%, Nielsen stated.
The first YouTube video, a 19-second clip titled "Me at the Zoo," was uploaded on April 23, 2005, by co-founder Jawed Karim. Since then, the video has amassed an astounding 355 million views and 17 million likes.
On average, 20 million videos are uploaded to YouTube daily, and in 2024, users commented on over 100 million videos every day. Creators also received hearted comments from an average of 10 million viewers daily, while YouTube videos garnered 3.5 billion likes from users per day last year.
To commemorate its 20th birthday, YouTube has unveiled several improvements to enhance the user experience. In the coming weeks, YouTube TV members will have the opportunity to experiment with building their own multiview with select non-sports content, starting with popular channels and expanding in the following months.
Last year, a small group of creators gained access to the ability to voice-reply to comments on their videos. YouTube has announced plans to expand this feature in 2024. Users can now create their very own personalized radio station with Ask Music, which is available on iOS and Android for all YouTube Premium and YouTube Music users. Additionally, 4 times playback speed is rolling out on YouTube Premium, and numerous other features will be arriving this summer, offering easier navigation, streamlined access to comments, channel information, and subscribing.
